Owner’s Guide -- Thank you for purchasing the Lightning Trigger® !

The Lightning Trigger® is a high quality, ultra-sensitive lightning/flash activated camera shutter release designed to provide the photographer with the ability to photograph lightning easily during the day or at night. The unit only requires attachment to the camera and will automatically adjust for varying light levels ranging from the brilliance of mid-day to the darkest night. No adjustments are necessary. The Lightning Trigger maintains the metering system active on many cameras to achieve proper exposure. There are some important things to know before using the device that will help you enjoy lightning photography.

REMEMBER, ALWAYS SAFETY FIRST! Read the accompanying information on lightning safety before using the Lightning Trigger.

The Lightning Trigger is extremely sensitive to light flashes. It will respond to intracloud (heat) lightning as well as stroke lightning. In addition, since lightning will occur over a wide expanse of the sky, the Lightning Trigger is designed to detect omni-directional flashes. The device can respond to the lightning flashes of storms outside the camera’s field of view due to atmospheric scattering of light. You should be selective in choosing the thunderstorm you wish to photograph. An isolated storm that has a high proportion of ground flashes will provide the best results!

General camera connection instructions:

The Lightning Trigger mounts directly onto the camera’s flash shoe and couples to the camera via the electronic cable release.

Check for additional instructions in the appendix for your camera model that may supersede the following and may include further information on camera settings.

The following camera connection steps will help to ensure the camera shutter is not false triggered.

1. Ensure camera power and Lightning Trigger power is off

2. Attach Lightning Trigger to camera flash shoe

3. Connect release cable to Lightning Trigger and then to camera

If you have a digital camera, you may find that the cable connection to the camera may be necessary after the camera’s system has initialized and you may follow these steps.

Care and handling:

The Lightning Trigger should be treated and handled with the care of a camera and should not be dropped and/or exposed to extremes of heat or moisture. Especially, do not leave in a car. This unit is not waterproof. In rare cases, strong static fields will cause the device to false trigger. In such instances switch the Lightning Trigger off and remove from the static field.
